Canada tells Royal ‘don’t interfere’ over freedom for Quebec

Ségolène Royal, the French Socialist presidential candidate, sparked a diplomatic row with Canada yesterday after appearing to call for Quebec’s independence in the latest in a series of blunders.

Ms Royal, 53, touched a raw nerve when she backed demands for Quebec’s “freedom”, and was rebuked by Stephen Harper, the Canadian Prime Minister.

They say that the woman who presented herself as a breath of fresh air in a tired, male-dominated political world has been revealed as worryingly inexperienced.

“She is extremely lightweight on serious and sensitive subjects,’ Michèle Alliot-Marie, the Defence Minister, said. She is backing Mr Sarkozy.

Gays are a capitalist pollutant: Maoists

NEPAL’S hardline Maoist guerillas, on the brink of achieving effective government power in the Himalayan kingdom, have turned their attention to so-called “social pollutants” and denounced homosexuals as “a by-product of capitalism”. Emerging from a decade of fighting government forces, the insurgents have launched a clean-up drive against polygamy, polyandry, infidelity, drunkenness and homosexuality — even though many gays were previously aligned with the Maoists against the autocratic rule of the widely despised King Gyanendra.

Mosque plans trigger neighbor’s pig races

A man unhappy with an Islamic association’s plans to build a mosque next to his property has staged pig races as a protest during afternoon prayers. Craig Baker, 46, sold merchandise and grilled sausages Friday for about 100 people who showed up in heavy rain. He insisted he wasn’t trying to offend anyone with the pigs, which are forbidden from the Muslim diet. “I am just defending my rights and my property,” Baker said. “They totally disrespected me and my family.”
