Man’s Finger Bitten Off in Scuffle at Health Care Rally

A 65-year-old man had his finger bitten off Wednesday evening at a health care rally in Thousand Oaks, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s investigators were called to Hillcrest and Lynn Road at 7:26 p.m. About 100 protesters sponsored by MoveOn.org were having a rally supporting health care reform.

The finger-biting incident occurred after a member of the group protesting health care reform, William Rice, 65, of Newbury Park, became involved in a heated discussion with a member of Code Pink, sheriff’s Capt. Ross Bonfiglio said. After the argument, Rice returned to where his own group was standing. A man from Moveon.org’s area then walked over to the opponents and verbally confronted Rice, allegedly calling him names and acting aggressively, Bonfiglio said.

Rice later told investigators he felt threatened by the man and punched him in the nose, Bonfiglio said.

The punch set off a fist fight between the two men, during which the tip of Rice’s left pinky finger was bitten off, Bonfiglio said.

Now the leader of the research team says he believes the flesh had been eaten by humans, while its teeth may have been used to make a necklace.

Fernando Rozzi, of Paris’s Centre National de la Récherche Scientifique, said the jawbone had probably been cut into to remove flesh, including the tongue. Crucially, the butchery was similar to that used by humans to cut up deer carcass in the early Stone Age.

“Neanderthals met a violent end at our hands and in some cases we ate them,” Rozzi said.
The idea will provoke considerable opposition from scientists who believe Neanderthals disappeared for reasons that did not involve violence. Neanderthals were a sturdy species who evolved in Europe 300,000 years ago, made complex stone tools and survived several ice ages before they disappeared 30,000 years ago – just as modern human beings arrived in Europe from Africa.

300 Stray Dogs Dumped on Island Turn to Cannibalism

More than 300 stray dogs that were dumped on isolated islands turned to cannibalism after weeks of starvation, animal welfare activists said Thursday.

The plight of the dogs cast away by villagers on two small, uninhabited islands off Malaysia’s western Selangor state ignited outrage after activists this week released photographs showing dogs eating the carcasses of ones that had died.

Residents of a fishing village on Pulau Ketam, another island off Selangor, caught the dogs last month and took them to the islands covered in mangroves. The villagers said they never intended to be cruel — they believed the dogs could feed on the deserted islands’ wildlife — but wanted to rid their island of dogs that defecate on the streets and sometimes bite children.

Two men have reportedly admitted killing their elder brother and eating parts of his body which they kept in the fridge for months.

The pair, named only as Timur and Marat G, said they murdered their brother Rafis at their home in the central Russian city of Perm, according to newspaper Tvoi Den.

Police grew suspicious when the brothers reported Rafis missing but were vague about his details.

After raiding their house, officers are said to have found the victim’s skeleton, which had been stripped bare and buried in the garden.

“It’s definitely a bad report. We did pick up little bit from last year, but this is over 30 percent below what used to be normal,” said Walt Meier, a research scientist with the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

This past summer, the Arctic sea ice dwindled to its second lowest level. Arctic sea ice is usually one to three meters, or as much as 9 feet thick. It grows during autumn and winter and shrinks in the spring and summer.

Scientists have monitored sea ice conditions for about 50 years with the help of satellites. Changes in the past decade have been alarming to climate researchers and oceanographers.

“It is the second lowest on record … If anything it is reinforcing the long-term trend. We are still losing the ice cover at a rate of 10 percent per decade now, and that is quite an increase from five years ago,” said Meier. “We are still heading toward an ice cover that is going to melt completely in the summertime in the Arctic.”

Cannibal goes vegetarian in jail

A GERMAN man who sliced up an internet penpal and ate him has become a vegetarian in prison because he can’t stand the idea of factory-formed meat.

A Bavarian radio station reported that 45-year-old Armin Meiwes, serving 8-½ years for manslaughter, was now a vegetarian.

“He finds the idea of factory farming as distasteful as his crime was,” a fellow inmate told Radio Bavaria.

“He now sticks to vegetarian dishes.”

Cannibal loses final appeal

A German cannibal, jailed for life for killing and eating a willing victim in a case that shocked the nation, lost an appeal against his sentence and will serve at least 15 years in prison, a court ruled on Friday.

“The life-long sentence means the defendant can be released no sooner than in 15 years – and then only if he is no longer dangerous,” the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe, Germany’s highest appeals court, has said.

Victim Bernd-Juergen Brandes travelled by train to meet cannibal Armin Meiwes in the western town of Rotenburg after the two men made contact over the internet.

Meiwes then videotaped himself severing the victim’s penis with a knife before both men tried to eat it.
